Business Growth for the New Year

Monday, 2nd January 2012

Recently I was on Hollis Chapman Show. Below are some of the answers I gave him in the fun interview.

Hollis ChapmanTell us a little about yourself, and your business?

Lisa J. Peck: I am Lisa J. Peck, known as the Step It Up Queen, and I have been helping entrepreneurs and business owners grow their business and balance the needs of home for over 18 years. I am personally a mother of 8, currently have five teenagers with four of them girls.

HC: Share with us your thoughts on your slogan: “grow your business on your own terms.”

LJP: One of the lessons I think we as a society are learning, is that having it all is not so fun. There is a shift in society where people don’t want to be told how to do business or how to do their life. What they want is to do things their way. There are growing trends of people doing their businesses from their homes, husbands staying home and not wanting to miss out on raising their kids, and baby boomers who don’t want to be shoved into retirement.

More and more people want to build their business working when they want, playing when they want, being with their family, and doing things they want.

If we are going to counteract the negativity that has been in the media saying everything is doomed then we must first start with ourselves and our businesses. By honoring who we are and our values, we serve our clients and customers better and consequently we are bettering the world.

HC: Video promoting is a great tool; I love yours! Share some tips with us.

LJP: First tip on video promoting is to get comfortable with the camera and forget the ego. The camera is a liar. It will make you look fatter and older… just pretend that doesn’t exist. If you get caught up in your image and how you look, you will not get your message our there and you will not be helping the people you are meant to serve. So as you are learning to get comfortable with the camera, remember lots and lots of self-love and acceptance. Celebrate your courage for trying it out, because it is not easy.

Another tip: keep on doing it. It gets easier. The more experience you have the better it is. Plus I would also say you can do things that you never imagined. I have had a major hang up my whole life with memorizing, and the cue cards weren’t working because you could tell that I was reading. So I decided to make it a game. How many lines could I deliver without messing up?

Absolute miracles happened. I have been able to do things that I never thought I was able to do and I caught on pretty fast. I would have never known that I was capable of doing that if I hadn’t made it a game and seen what really was possible.

HC: How do you attract happiness in your life and business?

LJP: To attract happiness, the first thing you need to do is figure out what happiness is for you. Sounds simple, but a lot of people don’t even know what it is that makes them happy. And it isn’t as easy as simply doing more of one thing. Most of us are complicated people who need a mix of different things in different measures, and at different times… like a recipe. It is a lot of fun work to figure out what it is that will bring you more happiness and how much.

A great thing to do is to implement a regular practice in your life wherein you know that if you do certain things it will put you in your best mental and physical state. For some people it is meditating, for others, reading something spiritual every day. A lot of people do better if they are regularly in nature. For me, I need to journal and read. Figuring out what those things are and doing them can dramatically improve your happiness level and the success that you achieve.

HC: Lisa, you teach that so much in success is about dealing with doubts. What if you are not getting the clients and things just are not going as smooth as you wish?

LJP: Doubt is one of those things I haven’t met anyone that doesn’t have it now and then. It is one of those things that can completely take you down if you are not careful. One of the best ways to deal with doubt is to get really clear on what it is saying, what is it that you are worrying about, and look at it realistically. Is what you are worried about true? Is there something you can do about it? If so, what, and by when, are you going to do it? If you can’t do anything, what is the worst that can happen? Will you survive that? Can you handle it?

Almost always you can handle it. If not, then I would advise you to get some support team in your life so you can handle it and move on. To me, the worst thing is not trying, not seeing if you can do it even if you don’t think you can. You might be pleasantly surprised and if you fail, oh well, what’s another failure. At least you have more information now and know that way didn’t work.

HC: You suggest: Do the small things first to grow your business. Could you give us some examples?

LJP: Small things to grow your business can be as simple as taking three action steps a day, every day. For example, if your business is reliant on marketing, making sure you spend an hour a day on marketing. Or, if you make most your money when you make phone calls, making sure that each day no matter what is happening you make three phone calls—no matter what. Another small thing that would make a huge difference is to know your financial numbers and statists of production Know how much money you have booked for that month and how close you are to your goal.

HC:  A lot of small business owners and entrepreneurs struggle with how to get a competitive advantage. Are we born with it, or can we build it?

LJP: Everyone can have a competitive advantage if they do their homework and figure out what that is. Really, to have the competitive advantage is to be yourself and know what your gifts are and how that benefits other people and blesses their lives, and communicate that. There really is not competition because each person is unique and does things in their own way and is meant to help certain people. My ideal clients are movers and shakers, the people who want to change the world. There are a lot of people who don’t want this, so they aren’t my clients. There are a lot of people who do want to change the world and out of that group I only need a small percentage to be completely booked. To find those people, the more I show up being me the more people who I can help will respond. And the more I show up as myself, those who I can’t help will be disinterested.

HC: Lisa, you seem to love doing your new TV show… It is short and has great tips on growing your business. Why the TV show?

LJP: I am doing the show Biz On Your Terms because I was told over and over that I have a unique presence, that I am different, and that the message people are most responding to wasn’t coming across in my blog posts or even my radio show: but people got it from me when I was live. Since I can’t duplicate myself, and I do want to help as many people as possible, it seemed I needed to do TV for people to truly get me. Another reason is that video is quick and easy for people to get a lot of information from. I want to best serve, and most people are extremely busy, so TV is a fun way to give them great tips on how to grow their business that only takes them 5 minutes to get the information they need.

HC: You describe having a solid, clear, concise 90 day focus for the start of the New Year. Could you comment on that?

LJP: We can be motivated on one huge project for about 90 days. I love boiling down that project into a sound bite—no more than five words, something catchy that I can keep as a focus to make sure that my business is moving forward. It is an easy thing to do that makes a huge difference in your business.

HC: Final question, Lisa: For what do you want to be remembered professionally?
